Part of our FACET collection of fuzzface circuit variants.
The Facet DC is a close tonal copy of a Denis Cornell Fuzz Face I had in for repair. That unit was fitted with the fabled NKT275 germanium transistors and it got me thinking if I could get close to it using silicin transistors from my stash of NOS devices?
Well the answer is pretty flippin close. Its a touch brighter in the volume clean up, but the decay curve is super similar and it plays in a very very simimilar way. I ended up using some low gain ME C1016DR transistors (from the same ME transistor family as used IZ, RDS and May Boost)
This is voiced a little different to our BC183 FACET FF, with less high end and more saturation in the low frequency. Check out my comparison video on this page.
Still, big fat and ballsy, the fuzz that everyone knows the sound of ... huge bass, knarly fuzz and then in the flick of the guitars volume sparkling, dynamic cleans.
Controls are Fuzz, Vol and Trim. Fuzz and Vol are Pretty much self explanatory, but the trim has some hidden magic - This controls the pedals input resistance. Fully clockwise the control is out of the circuit, so as you turn the knob anti clockwise it will increase the input impedance and reduce the saturation at the output. This is useful for many reasons, such as playing high output pickups or running a wah pedal before the fuzz. It can also be used to take the edge off the saturation and help with clean-up from the guitar volume and fatness. it still does a great job still keeping its dynamics intact as you turn down your guitar volume.
Screen-printed using super glossy old school enamel ink. its hard to photograph just how cool this finish is.
Izzy builds these fuzz pedals in our garden workshop in Northamptonshire UK. This includes painting, drilling, and screen printing the design onto the enclosures. Izzy populates the vintage style circuit board with the finest components. We finish the entire pedal to a standard that looks as good inside, as it sounds on the outside. It might be covered up but when you're in that moment you KNOW the mojo you have under the hood.
Please be aware, these are totally hand built and so there might me some slight cosmetic variation between each pedal. Tonally, I play each one to make sure they sound as good as the first one, before signing off, no tone generator, no gadgets - just a telecaster and my ears.
Please note, all my silicon pedals have a boss style 2.1 center negative DC jack only, there is no battery snap. silicon transistors are not sensitive to DC supply type unlike their germanium counterparts.
